BEM Systems, Inc. (BEM) was awarded a task order for conducting a comprehensive remedial investigation of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) at Eielson Air Force Base (AFB), AK. The task order, which includes a base scope of work along with the potential of additional options, was awarded by the Air Force Civil Engineer Center (AFCEC) to BEM under its A-E13ES prime contract. The project’s overall objective is to delineate the extent of PFAS in soil, sediment, surface water, and groundwater throughout the base and to conduct a base-wide assessment of multiple media for potential off-site migration. The results of the investigation will be used to develop a detailed conceptual site assessment to support ecological and human health risk assessments and determine potential mitigation options.
BEM will be supported by Arcadis U.S., Inc. (Arcadis), a teaming partner on BEM’s A-E13ES contract. Arcadis has been an industry leader in developing technologies for the study, investigation, and remediation of PFAS contamination. BEM will be deploying a National Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Program-approved mobile laboratory, used in conjunction with Arcadis’ Vertical Aquifer Profile (VAP) and adaptive high-resolution site characterization approach to rapidly assess for the presence of PFAS in soil and groundwater. This data will be utilized to prepare a flux-based Conceptual Site Model (CSM) to assist in the identification of primary source areas. This model may be utilized to support future risk assessments and feasibility analysis.
Mark Nardolillo, the President and CEO of BEM Systems, stated that the goal of the USAF was to achieve comprehensive delineation and development of the CSM within one field season. “This is a tall order in northern Alaska where the field season is only a few months,” said Nardolillo, “but BEM’s 20 years of experience working in Alaska for the USAF and Arcadis’s cutting-edge technology gave the Air Force the confidence that the BEM team could meet the challenge.”
