BEM Systems, Inc. (BEM) was awarded three task orders for conducting remedial investigations of PFOS (Perfluorooctanesulfonic Acid) and PFOA (Perfluorooctanoic Acid) at three US Air Force installations: Peterson Air Force Base (AFB) and Buckley AFB in Colorado and Ellsworth AFB in South Dakota; known collectively as the Front Range. The three task orders, which total over $19 million, including options, were awarded by the Air Force Civil Engineer Center (AFCEC) under its AE13ES contract. The goal for each project is to delineate the extent of PFOS/PFOA contamination in soil, sediment, surface water, and groundwater on individual validated source areas and conduct base-wide of multiple media for off-site migration. The results of the investigation will then be used to develop conceptual site models and if the situation warrants conducting human and ecological risk assessments.
BEM will be supported by Arcadis U.S., Inc. (Arcadis), a teaming partner on BEM’s AFCEC contract. Arcadis has been an industry leader in developing technologies for the study, investigation, and remediation of PFAS contamination. For the Front Range projects, BEM will be deploying the only National Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Program approved mobile laboratory in the US for analyzing PFAS-type contaminants in soil and water, which will be used in conjunction with Arcadis’ Vertical Aquifer Profile approach to assessing the presence rapidly and dominant migration pathways of PFOS/PFOA in soil and groundwater. Arcadis has successfully field-tested both technologies under multiple DoD research and development programs over the past five years.
